DEALING WITH ABSENCE (2021)

To experience absence, we have to be ready to have no sensory input, encounter no resistance, and make no touch with the absent entity. That isn’t to say there is no access to it. It must already be a part of our corporeality, of remembered bodily practice to be able to sense it as missing. We cannot miss what we don’t know.

Dealing with Absence crosses different media: dance, cinema, virtual reality, and social media. A tecno-poetic work that wants to bring attention to how technologies are changing the rules of interactions between bodies, creating both new limits and new possibilities.

The project has developed as a “choreographic delivery”: we sent a VR headset containing choreographic scores to dancers around Italy. We chose to use Instagram (dealing_with_absence) as our rehearsal space, and a diary in which we all shared our thoughts and reflections on how our bodies were affected by this practice.

Screens are progressively getting closer to the body, making the fruition of visual content much more isolated and disconnected from the surrounding. A person can be here and at the same time be in another reality, following another dialogue, another stream of events.

In this performative movie, we see a community that aims to connect through movement even though they cannot be physically present, raising questions on what is absence and what is presence in this new situation.

A reflection on Virtual Reality (VR) that explores two levels: the dimension of an “inside” in which an intimate experience takes place using 360 content visible only to the user through the VR headset; and an “outside” of the viewer, that is to show how the VR experience affects the user’s body and how the internal experience can become a resource to generate movement.

The research therefore aims to deepen the learning of a physical language from a VR headset and the possibility of creating a choreographic score starting from a 2D video montage relocated in a 360 environment. The editing process starts from reassembled film scenes (in the style of Alberto Grifi) following a kinesthetic line with respect to movement alternating with immersive videos that instead focus on an emotionally engaging experience.

The project was selected for Biennale College Cinema VR 2020 as one of the 6 Italian projects, offering an opportunity for training and in-depth study, and has been supported since its inception by Gold VR for the technical part.
