Spraytrains è un progetto fotografico nato nel Gennaio del 2010; che, nello specifico, documenta ed ha documentato buona parte del train writing del nord-ovest Italiano, e non solo.
Da 10 anni a questa parte Spraytrains ha raccolto e condiviso un enorme quantità di materiale fotografico tramite i suoi canali: il sito internet, i canali social; ed i cinque volumi cartacei di Spraytrains.
Ho avuto il piacere di conoscere Chiara di Spraytrains di persona, un pò di tempo fa a Roma al Kickit; ed in occasione dell’uscita dell’ultimo Volume cartaceo ho voluto farle qualche domanda riguardo al progetto ed alla sua storia.
Quando è nato il progetto Spraytrains e come è successo?
Spraytrains è nato nel Gennaio del 2010, mentre ero nella mia cameretta a cercare di capire cosa potevo farne di tutte le foto di treni dipinti che avevo dentro al cellulare. Decisi di aprire il mio sito, ispirata al Tumblr di Iuter. Per il nome ho pensato prima a “Godzilla”, poi a “Graffititreni” ma non mi piaceva, infine mi sono rivolta all’inglese e ho fatto il merge delle parole “Spray” e “Trains”.
Il mio essere pendolare per andare all’università mi portava a prendere quotidianamente dei treni e su di essi ho notato queste anomalie fatte di colori, linee e frasi; successivamente ho fatto quello che faccio sempre quando qualcosa mi colpisce: lo fotografo. Da lì è iniziato questo percorso fatto di eccitazione nel passare del tempo su è giù tra i binari o in stazione per scoprire se c’era qualcosa di nuovo da documentare e condividere.
Dove ha le sue radici? Sia geografiche, sia culturali.
È iniziato tutto dalla città di Torino. Successivamente nel 2013 spostandomi a studiare a Milano ho avuto la fortuna di espandere i miei orizzonti e di scoprire il gioiello che è la metro di Milano. Nel 2014 ho fatto anche il primo viaggio all’estero: Amsterdam e Rotterdam che mi hanno confermato che quasi ovunque c’è qualche treno dipinto che gira e vale la pena di aspettare che passi per fotografarlo.
I primi stimoli legati al Writing li ho ricevuti dalla cultura dello Skate. Leggevo nel 2004 Freestyler Skateboard Magazine, che dedicava per ogni numero uno speciale ad un writer, ma ammetto che il mio interesse era limitato; preferivo memorizzare le sequenze di un trick e ammirare gli scatti, all’interno della rivista, che lo scomponevano.
Sono sicura che l’investimento che ho fatto in carta per tutte le riviste di Skate e Snowboard (Thrasher, Transworld, Method, 6.00 am, Skateboarder, Sequence…) mi hanno fatto amare la fotografia e mi hanno stimolato, nel 2016, a creare la mia produzione di fanze, per avere sempre qualcosa di concreto in mano da sfogliare.
Cosa fa Spraytrains? Cosa ha fatto fino ad ora, ma soprattutto, cosa vorrebbe fare in futuro?
Spraytrains documenta attraverso scatti fotografici quello che gira sui treni e lo condivide sia attraverso il profilo Instagram che andando a farcire l’archivio presente sul sito. Penso di essere stata anche uno stimolo per quei ragazzi e ragazze che appassionati del fenomeno hanno deciso di fotografare la scena della loro zona e di condividerla.
Per quanto riguarda il futuro vorrei avere abbastanza fotografie per riempire il Vol.6 (lockdown permettendo) ed in generale avere più occasioni per viaggiare e scoprire la realtà legata al Writing di altri paesi, soprattutto il Sudamerica.
Come lo fa? Con quale attitudine?
Sono una ragazza determinata e credo in quello che faccio. Determinazione ereditata in parte dallo skate, per cui per forza di cose devi rialzarti dopo che cadi, altrimenti che ci stai a fare sdraiato per terra?
Da quando lavoro cerco di bilanciare questa passione con tutto il resto, ritagliando dei momenti dedicati allo stare in banchina. È un’attività molto in solitaria, quindi uno per forza deve essere equilibrato ed in pace con se stesso, accettando che c’è il giorno che porto a casa una foto, come c’è il giorno che ne porto a casa una cinquantina (ai tempi d’oro del 2014 fai pure 200). Non sento pressioni particolari, anche se ovviamente mi dispiace quando cerco di tenere scatti inediti per le fanze e poi li trovo in rete.
Però rispetto l’altro e le sue decisioni.
Come è stato il percorso fino ad ora? Hai notato cambiamenti da primi anni a oggi?
Il 2013 è stato l’anno con più cambiamenti. Il primo fattore che ha creato la svolta è stato un’email ricevuta dal team di Tumblr che mi comunicava che amano il mio blog, ed in particolare il fatto che pubblico contenuti quotidianamente, e dunque avevano deciso di inserirlo nella sezione riflettori, categoria Arte. Da quel giorno i followers sono incrementati ad una velocità pazzesca.
Il secondo cambiamento che ha creato un forte impatto è stato il trasferimento a vivere a Milano. L’ultimo cambiamento è stato l’entrare in contatto con chi era responsabile della creazione dei soggetti delle mie foto. Mi sono ritrovata quindi nella condizione di acquisire nuove informazioni che probabilmente da sola avrei messo mesi a capire.
Come conseguenza di quest’ultimo cambiamento mi è capitato però anche di scontrarmi con chi non capiva il perché mi dedicassi solo a fotografare i treni senza dipingerli. La risposta è che semplicemente non ho mai provato l’interesse a prendere in mano uno spray e ad usarlo. Al contrario la scelta di andare ogni volta che posso in stazione senza avere la più pallida idea di quello che potrei trovarci, per me è assai allettante
Una cosa che ho appreso col passare degli anni e che rispetto all’inizio non mi aspettavo, è la grande rete di connessioni che ho creato, basata sulla fiducia ma anche sul rispetto e l’amore comune per i treni.

Ten years of Spraytrains
Spraytrains is a photographic project born in January 2010 that documents the train writing scene of the Italian North-West part; with some incursions along the peninsula and abroad.
For 10 years now Spraytrains has collected and shared a huge amount of photographic material through its channels: the website and the social media channels; plus 5 printed volumes of Spraytrains.
Some time ago I had the pleasure of meeting Chiara, the creator of Spraytrains, in Rome during the Kick It; on the occasion of the release of the last printed volume I wanted to ask her a few questions about the project and its history.
When was the Spraytrains project born and how did it happen?
Spraytrains was born in January 2010, while I was in my bedroom trying to figure out what I could do with all the pictures of painted trains that I had inside my phone. I decided to open my website, inspired by Iuter’s Tumblr. For the name first I thought about “Godzilla”, then “Graffititreni” but I didn’t like it. Finally I turned to English and I mixed the words “Spray” and “Trains”.
My commuting to go to university led me to take trains daily, and on them I noticed these anomalies made of colors, lines and phrases; then I did what I always do when something hits me: I photograph it. From there I started this journey made of excitement in spending time up and down between the platforms or in the station, to find out if there was something new to document and share.
Where does Spraytrains have its roots? Both geographical and cultural.
It all started from the city of Turin. Later in 2013 I moved for studying purposes to Milan, there I was lucky enough to expand my horizons and discover the jewel that is the Milan metro. In 2014 I also made my first trip abroad: Amsterdam and Rotterdam; which confirmed to me that almost everywhere there are some painted trains running around and it is worth waiting for them to pass by and to photograph them.
I received the first stimuli on writing from the Skate culture. I read in 2004 Freestyle Skateboard Magazine, which dedicated a special to a writer for each issue, but I admit that my interest was limited; I preferred to memorize the sequences of a trick, admiring the shots inside the magazine that explained it.
I’m sure that the investment I made for all the Skate and Snowboard magazines (Thrasher, Transworld, Method, 6.00 am, Skateboarder, Sequence…) made me love photography and stimulated me, in 2016, to create my own fanze production, to always have something concrete in my hands to look at.
What does Spraytrains do? What has it done so far and above all what is willing to do in the future?
Spraytrains documents what runs on the trains through photographic shots and shares it both through the Instagram profile and in the website. I think I was also a stimulus for those boys and girls who are passionate about the phenomenon; and so they have decided to photograph the scene in their area and share it.
As for the future, I would like to have enough photographs to fill Vol.6 (lockdown permitting) and in general to have more opportunities to travel and discover the reality related to writing in the other countries, especially South America.
How do you do it? With what attitude?
I am a determined girl and I believe in what I do. The determination I inherited in part from the Skate, so inevitably you have to get up after you fall, otherwise what are you doing lying on the ground?
Since I started to work I have tried to balance this passion with the other aspects of my life, trying to dedicate enough time for spotting. It’a a very solitary activity, so one must necessarily be balanced and at peace with oneself. I had to come to terms with the days when I snap only one photo and the days in which I can bring home fifty ( in the golden year of 2014 the number could go up to 200). I don’t feel any particular pressure in what I do, although I am sad when I try to keep something unpublished for the fanzine and then I find it on the net.
However, I respect the other people and their decisions.
How was the path? Have you noticed changes from the early years to now?
2013 was the year with most changes. The first factor that changed things was an email received from the Tumblr team, telling me that they love my blog, and in particular the fact that I publish content daily. Therefore they decided to include it in the special Art Section. Since that day the followers have increase rapidly.
The second change that created a strong impact was the move to Milan. The last change was to get in touch with whoever was responsible for creating the subject of my photo. I found myself in a position to acquire new informations that I probably would have taken months to understand by myself.
As a result of this last change, however, I also encountered those who did not understand why I dedicated myself only to photographing trains without painting them. The answer is that I have simply never been interested in picking up a spray and using it. On the contrary, the choice of going to the station every time I can without having any idea of what I could find there, is much more tempting for me.
One thing that I have learned over the years and that I did not expect is the great network of connections that I have created, based on trust and also respect and love for trains.
